Go vegan and be palm oil aware

Why -

  • going vegan  (living in a way which is cruelty free and excludes all forms of exploitation of animals for food, clothing or any other purpose) is better for animals as they are not abused for our table, clothes, shoes or household products - more information
  • it is also better for the planet - more information
  • and your health  - even more so if you eat a wholefood plant based diet more information

What we hear often : "I really thought going vegan would be hard and I put it off for ages but its a lot easier than I thought and I wish I had done it sooner"

People talk about being a flexitarian or reducetarian to describe eating less meat. By being vegan you are doing the best for animals, the planet and your own health. There are so many great and cruelty free things to choose from, it just takes a bit of short term focus and your life will be changed for the better forever.

  • palm oil in products means deforestation on a massive scale and is bad for the planet, animals and your health too - more here

How -

  • Consumer power -  Overview , Change what you buy to eat, Change what you wear, Change what you buy to use, Check ingredients, Choose good places to eat, Vegan pet food

  •  Resources - The Vegan Society, Vegan starter kits,  Vegan nutrition - advice for all ages , go vegan for 22 days with mentors and dietitians, recipes (more to follow). See also support section.

Whatever you do - Act today - don't delay

Influence others

 Why -

  • Your voice counts. Consumers/ voters can and do drive change. One voice is a whisper many voices a SHOUT! Look at getting a climate emergency declared - the public voice was HEARD

How -

  • Write to your MP  , Join petition sites and add your voice to a couple of petitions a day - they do make a difference, Spread the v word
  • Write to supermarkets, food companies, cosmetic companies, restaurants (sample restaurant letter) etc telling them you may be buying less from and politely asking for more cruelty free options, less packaging, palm oil free products or challenge them if they sell cruel products like glue traps. https://www.peta.org.uk/action/see-someone-selling-using-glue-traps
  • Demonstrate for the animals or planet  eg live export demos- or participate in a cube of truth - see events page, see also extinction rebellion
  • Distribute leaflets / put up posters or billboards
  • Push for change in your work place - ask for vegan options, more recycling, less plastic, promote car sharing etc

Taking small steps is better than taking no steps!

Live sustainably and help protect the planet. We have just a few years to make huge changes........

  • Climate change - some facts, the 1.5 degree difference
  • Plastics - watch the Blue Planet
  • Test your carbon footprint here on the WWF site then pledge some actions here
  • Habitat destruction - see palm oil information
  • Litter problems - and the impact on animals - see www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/litter

How -

  • play your part in reducing global warming- this IPCC school report summarises how
  • Our planet 5 recommendations - eat a mainly plant based diet , if buying meat or fish make sure it is from a sustainable source, switch to a clean energy supplier, if buying palm oil make sure it is deforestation free, buy wood and paper from sustainable sources
  • think about your impact - have less children, walk more - drive less, car share, use public transport, turn your heating down
  • Switch to a green energy supplier like Ecotricity (which is registered with The Vegan Society) and who add to the grid

  • make eco bricks, aim for zero waste
  • send e-cards rather than paper ones - there are some lovely ones on www.jacquielawson.com
  • Litter - do litter picks, chinese lanterns
  • be palm oil aware - In just 25 years, more than a quarter of Indonesia's forests – 76 million acres, an area almost the size of Germany – have disappeared- info,  video,  www.bos-uk.org/about-us/articles/bos-uk-news/i/palm-oil-what-to-do
  • buy environmentally friendly goods
  • avoid microplastics in your washing- other than recommending non vegan friendly woollen fleeces - here's a good article on the subject
